ABC news segment on the Heroin Crisis.....

The Heroin Crisis

The above link is an ABC news segment on the epidemic of heroin use and how it can affect anyone. It is indiscriminate in who it grabs a hold of. Thank you Ron for sharing this.

A shocking statistic.....24 million people in the U.S. are addicted to alcohol and/or drugs and only 1 out of 10 will choose treatment. Dismal.....

God have mercy on us.

Thanks for the link. A lot of great information in 8 minutes.

My two-cents? Make Oxycontin only available in palliative care. That is what is happening where I live. It is a great drug but because it is so powerful and so addictive it should only be used with the dying.

We also need to educate. Most people still do not know that addiction is a disease. Most people think addiction is simply "mind over matter".

Treatment programs need to be made available to everyone. Free or affordable. I live in Canada and even here treatment starts out at about $30,000 for a 60-day program. That is way too much for most people to pay. Treatment programs are becoming a way to make a lot of money. That is sad.

Incidentally, my sister-in-law died of a Oxycontin overdose. (I never met her as she died just after I started dating my husband.) It was suspected that she mixed alcohol and fell asleep on her stomach and suffocated. Her 8 year old daughter found her.

Whatever we are doing is not working. We need to wipe the slate clean and start over.
