The great meeting my daughter shared with me consisted of a new leader.... not the man who was in charge of the remote. This young man didn't turn the tv on at all but instead they all talked. He shared how we all have a gauge. The average person's gauge runs between 1-10 with 10 being everything in life is pretty great. A person who uses substances gauge runs between 1-25 with 25 being everything is pretty great. When they stop using their substances they drop down to what the average person is feeling and they don't like it. Its uncomfortable. This young man explained that it takes time to normalize and that those uncomfortable feelings are part of the process...not to be numbed away, but to be walked through until the substance user acclimates to life without the numbing or tweaking or nodding or sleeping to excess.
This really spoke to my girl. Bless this young man.
Its science fair time again. Gawd! You all know how I feel about that. Lu seems to know everything (in a 10 year old "I can do it myself Mommmm" sort of way) but wants me sitting by her side just to watch her work. I get it....she doesn't feel sure of what to do so she wants me close in case she needs help or has a question.....or just to be there. Its a security thing. But heck it was boring to watch her work and not to get to do anything myself. Once again....her lines weren't straight enough because she wanted to do things free hand vs. using a ruler!!!, her printing wasn't uniform enough, her glue wrinkled the paper because she wouldn't use the glue stick like I suggested, and once again I was so frustrated. I guess I haven't really grown all that much in the science fair area because I wanted to grab everything and do it myself.
But I didn't. Progress and awareness!
I seriously think science fairs should be illegal in the state of Ca, on the grounds of parent abuse.Yeah, that's right....I said it.

LOL I totally agree on the Science Fairs!
He he he.
The most beautiful thing about homeschooling, the several years I did it, was our lack of participation in science fairs! Not that we didn't do tons of experiments with pretty satisfying degrees of success and much learning taking place.... we just didn't get stressed, compete with others whose parents had designed masterpiece displays, etc! I loved the anatomy units... I was the only mom who was willing to let people come over and do the dissection homework on the dining room table. Stinky fun and again, much learning going on. But I'm with you on the outlawing of those science fairs. Ugh!
I loved what the speaker said, Annette. Really wise and I'm sharing it with my daughter. I think it's so funny how kids want you to watch but not touch (I like science fairs).
You would probably love to sit with me at work because I never even write a post it note without a ruler!
Perhaps a Science Fair where the parents got to submit something too...now that would be great.
If you outlaw them in SC then I'm with you! They are torture (to the parents of course)!
You crack me up - you should send that little antedote into the Reader's Digest because I don't know a single parent that can't relate in some way to the Science Fair!
WOW - I love the gauge analogy. I think I may have even heard it somewhere before. It makes sense. I'm so glad it spoke to H. How wonderful to have a special GREAT meeting with her :)
One time my daughter made a woolly mammoth for science fair..it was so perfect. I knew then she was kinda like a genius. I liked science fairs until Andrew's turn came...LOL
Joy...YES! I agree, and that is how it was with my older three. However Lu is in a charter school and while they give us a lot of freedom, there are some obligations of enrollment and the science fair is one of them. Ugh.
Lou, you would love Lu's topic....an experiment that shows which food has the highest fat content and then she posted some healthy facts stating the effects of a high fat diet on our health.
"I wanted to grab everything and do it myself"
Ha, ya THINK !!!! Kinda sorta, maybe can relate :-)
Science Fairs - BLEHHHH
I've never done a science fair. I just had to say it. i've never done a science fair.
And here's my latest webpage (this is not spam, Annette's my friend) www.WireFreeBra.com
I have judged science fairs and thought that some of the entries were awesome. I like that kids are willing to work on an idea and then present it--good skills. I never thought about how it would affect the parents.
Well Syd, now you know! LOL
