Night time prayers

Molly and I were looking at apartments near her school. There are no "good" areas down there, lots of crime, so we  I am asking around and trying to find the least dangerous of the dangerous neighborhoods to release my beautiful girl into. Gas prices are over 4.00 a gallon in our parts and on its way up up up, and the commute is killing her.

So yet again, I release another of my children into God's hands to care for. That and her dad ordered her a giant pepper spray from the security guys at work.

So all of this made me think of the night time prayers I have said with each of my kids since they were babies. Recently it came out, in a very funny story that I won't go into here, that Molly still to this day says her own variation of that same prayer.

"Dear Lord, please let me have good and happy dreams, no bad or scary dreams. Please surround our house with your angels all around and from top to bottom and protect us from evil or danger. Please keep my heart soft so that I will be willing to listen to your voice and follow your will. Show me what it is you have for me to do. Please take care of (names off all siblings and parents, and anyone else that she thinks needs an extra little touch of divine love) Thank you for all of the blessings in our lives. In your name Jesus, Amen."

When she mentioned it, her older brother was in the room...he is almost 26 and he said, "I still pray that prayer too!" And little Lu and I share that prayer every night that I am not at work.

It made me feel good. They took something good from their childhoods. I gave them something that is meaningful to them. Simple as it is.

So there Molly will be, in her new apt laying snuggled in her bed with her down covers all gathered around her sweet face....saying her prayers each night.

God please keep her safe.

Every now and then I catch a glimpse of something in my children that I know I gave them...that is good. This would thrill me to no end, to know they kept a prayer from me. Awesome girl.

When I read this prayer I am reminded of many things we learn in our 12 step programs. I don't know when you entered Alanon but I assume it was before you taught your children this prayer? If so you had a good handle on step 11 before ever entering the rooms.

Aww,....so sweet,...& yes, such a wonderful mom moment when our grown "kids" tell us something that lets us know how they treasured something we did or taught them as children. To me, when that happens, it's often somewhat surprising that something was more important, or as you've shown, long lasting, than I'd thought. It does truly warm my heart more than most anything else. A special treat amongst the ups & downs journey that parenting has brought us. Thanks for sharing this,....& I must say,...that's one heck of a great prayer. Kudos to you my fellow mom.

What a great story. One to remember when you think they never listen to you.

I have a feeling they have more than beautiful prayers as your legacy. What a thankful moment, though, to be shown that you have done a wonderful job raising your babies.

How special for you to find out they are still saying the prayer! Its like your wrapped it around them in their childhood and they are still using that motherly warmth.

As I read this, I could hear the voice of a little boy saying "God bless grandma and Therese and Ross and (fill in the blanks with all the pets)....

Very special moments.

I said "Now I lay me down to sleep.." Ah, memories.

Like Pammie said, we occasionally catch a glimpse of something we did right. What is most important is all the things we did right, that we cannot see.

Oh it is so hard to let our children go out into the world, isn't it? But they grow and have their own lives and make good decisions and are so much stronger than we think. Molly is lucky to have a mother that cares as much as you clearly do.

Wonderful prayer. I know there are angels protecting our children because if there were not our children would have passed on a long long time ago.

Prayers are powerful.

Blessings to all and thanks so much for sharing.

You are a great mother. I think that she will do well out in the world. One has to be in the world at some point. There is a lot of world to see.
